CK-0028 Heartbreak Pier (TITANIC), Co Cork.
CK-0028  Heartbreak Pier (TITANIC), Co Cork. This is the the very pier in which passengers embarked at Queenstown, Cork (Now re-named COBH ) on the 11th April 1912 to board HMS TITANIC. There was two tenders that left this peer that day at Approx 11.30am taking Three 1st Class, Seven 2nd Class AND 120 persons into 3rd Class(KNOWN AS STEERAGE). The tenders PS IRELAND and PS AMERICA left the White Star Line Pier ( In Photograph)and ferried the passengers to the waiting HMS TITANIC in deep waters. At 1.30pm exchange of whistles indicated that the tenders business was complete and the TITANIC weighed anchor and she then left on her final journey for NEW YORK with a total of 1,308 passengers and 898 crew on board. This pier was never used again from the disaster, and has been left standing in time as a memorial to all those who lost their lives. SEE ALSO CK-0030, CK-0031, CK-0032 and CK-0033.
